Perfume

How long a perfume lasts depends as much on your skin as on the bottle.

The same perfume fades within a few hours on dry skin and lasts through the day on moisturized skin. That’s because scent clings to oil — which means how you apply it matters at least as much as which one you choose. Below, alongside Etoil EDP, we explain how to read a perfume and how to apply it.

Perfume glossary

A few terms that come up when people talk about perfume; all of them describe how a scent behaves.

EDP

Eau de Parfum

A concentration higher than eau de toilette and lower than pure perfume. In practice: longer wear with fewer sprays.

Top note

Top note

The first scent you smell the moment you spray. It’s the most volatile part and usually fades in 15–30 minutes — which is why you shouldn’t judge a perfume by its first sniff.

Heart note

Heart note

The layer that emerges once the top note fades and carries the perfume’s true character. This is where to decide whether it’s “your scent.”

Base note

Base note

The trace left on the skin hours later. This is the layer that determines longevity; because it’s made of heavy, oily molecules, it’s the last to evaporate.

Sillage

Sillage

The scent trail you leave behind as you pass. It’s a different measure from longevity: a perfume can last a long time but stay close to the skin, or fade quickly but project widely.

Pulse points

Pulse points

Inner wrists, neck, behind the ears, inner elbows. These spots, where blood vessels run close to the skin, are warmer and diffuse the scent throughout the day.

Longevity in four steps

When a perfume fades early, it’s usually about the application, not the product.

Apply to damp skin

Spray right after a shower, while your skin is still damp. Fragrance molecules cling to oil and moisture; dry skin can’t hold on to them, and the perfume fades noticeably faster. An unscented body lotion boosts that grip even more.

Target your pulse points

Inner wrists, neck, behind the ears and inner elbows. These are the warmer areas of the body and slowly diffuse the scent throughout the day. Two or three sprays from 15–20 cm away are enough.

Don’t rub

Rubbing your wrists together doesn’t “set” the scent; it actually breaks up the top notes and spoils the perfume’s opening. After spraying, let the scent dry on its own.

Avoid clashing scents

If you use a scented deodorant or body spray, choose one from the same scent family as your perfume or a neutral one. Two strong scents layered on top of each other spoil both.

The four most common mistakes

Judging a perfume by its first scent

The first scent out of the bottle is the top note, and it fades within half an hour. Whether a perfume suits you becomes clear in the heart note, about an hour after you spray it on your skin.

Rubbing your wrists together

Rubbing breaks down volatile molecules and makes them evaporate through heat. The perfume disappears faster and its opening is spoiled. Spray and leave it alone.

Spraying on dry skin

Dry skin can’t hold scent. On unmoisturized skin, the same perfume lasts hours less. Unscented moisturizer first, then perfume — the simplest way to boost longevity.

Storing the bottle in the bathroom or in the sun

Heat, humidity and light break down a perfume’s structure; the color darkens and the character changes. Keep the bottle in a cool, dark, dry place, ideally in its own box.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between EDP and EDT?

Concentration. An EDP (eau de parfum) contains a higher proportion of fragrance oils, so it lasts longer on the skin and you need fewer sprays. An EDT (eau de toilette) is lighter; it’s easy to wear during the day and in hot weather, but it may need a refresh during the day.

How do you make perfume last longer?

Apply it to damp skin. After a shower, put on an unscented moisturizer and spray your pulse points. Don’t rub your wrists together, and let it dry before you get dressed. On dry skin, the same perfume lasts noticeably less.

Where should you spray perfume?

On your pulse points: inner wrists, neck, behind the ears and inner elbows. Their warmth diffuses the scent throughout the day. Avoid spraying directly onto your hair; the alcohol it contains can dry it out. Perfume sprayed on clothing lasts longer but doesn’t open up the way it does on skin.

How many sprays a day is enough?

With an EDP, two to three sprays are enough for most uses. It’s normal to stop smelling your own perfume after a while — your nose gets used to it. Instead of spraying more, do a single refresh in the afternoon if needed.

How should you store perfume?

In a cool, dark, dry place. The bathroom is the worst place to store perfume because of the changes in temperature and humidity. Keeping the bottle in its box protects it from light; keeping the cap on slows the evaporation of the alcohol.

Can you wear perfume and deodorant together?

Yes, but the two scents shouldn’t compete. The safest option is a neutral or very lightly scented deodorant. Alternatively, layering scents from the same family keeps the fragrance more cohesive throughout the day.

What is the shelf life of perfume?

An unopened bottle lasts for years under the right conditions. Once opened, it generally keeps its character for three to five years. A noticeably darker color or a sour smell are signs that the perfume has gone off.

What Is EDP Perfume? Eau de Parfum Concentration

EDP perfume is the Eau de Parfum class, with a fragrance concentration of roughly 15 to 20 percent. Thanks to this concentration, it lasts an average of 6 to 8 hours on the skin and reduces the need to reapply during the day. The abbreviation appears on the bottle label as EDP; the perfume option here also comes in this concentration.

A higher fragrance concentration changes not only longevity but also the way the scent opens up. The top notes evaporate more slowly, and the heart and base notes stay in contact with the skin for longer.

What Does Eau de Parfum Mean? Decoding the Label

Eau de Parfum is French for "perfume water" and refers to a concentration class, not a fragrance family. The same scent can be made as both an EDT and an EDP; the notes are similar, but the longevity is different. The short answer to what eau de parfum means: a perfume with a high fragrance concentration.

Reading the abbreviation correctly helps when choosing between two bottles with the same name. Most of the price difference comes from this concentration, not from the size of the bottle. If the label only shows the brand name and volume, check the small-print class information on the box.

What Is EDT Perfume? How Long Does Eau de Toilette Last?

EDT perfume is the Eau de Toilette class, with a fragrance concentration of 5 to 15 percent, and it lasts an average of 3 to 5 hours on the skin. It opens up lighter than an EDP and fades faster during the day. That lower concentration is why it's a popular pick for hot weather and closed office spaces.

When choosing between EDT and EDP, how long you need it to last is the deciding factor. For an eight-hour day, a single spritz of EDP works; for short outings of a few hours, EDT stays more measured. When you try the two versions of the same scent side by side, the difference shows up not in the first ten minutes but in the third hour.

What Is EDC Perfume? Eau de Cologne Concentration

EDC perfume is the Eau de Cologne class, with a fragrance concentration of 2 to 5 percent, and it loses its effect within about 2 hours on average. It's the lightest of the three classes, which is why it's made in large bottles to be used generously. It's used for a refreshing feel after workouts and in the summer months.

  • EDC: 2 to 5 percent fragrance, about 2 hours
  • EDT: 5 to 15 percent fragrance, about 3 to 5 hours
  • EDP: 15 to 20 percent fragrance, about 6 to 8 hours

Can You Bring Perfume on a Plane? Carry-On Rules

Yes, you can bring perfume on a plane. In carry-on luggage, each container can hold no more than 100 ml, and all containers must fit in a clear, resealable bag with a total of no more than 1 liter. Small bottles like 45 ml fall well under this limit. Checked luggage is more flexible on volume; confirm your airline's current rules before you travel.

The other products you pack should follow the same volume logic; the 10-Piece Travel Brush Set is sized with these limits in mind.

Where Should You Spray Perfume? The Points That Boost Longevity

Spray perfume on your pulse points: inner wrists, behind the ears, neck and inner elbows. Hold the bottle 15 to 20 centimeters away from the skin and give each point a single spritz. Applying it to damp skin after a shower helps the scent last longer. Rubbing your wrists together breaks down the fragrance molecules and reduces longevity.

If you want to refresh during the day, a single light spritz on the ends of your hair from a distance is enough. Avoid applying directly to fabric, silk and jewelry; these surfaces hold scent differently from skin and can be left marked. If you have sensitive skin, it's a good idea to test a small area on the inner arm before first use.

How to Store Perfume: Conditions That Extend Its Life

Store perfume at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. A bathroom shelf is one of the worst spots because of the swings in temperature and humidity. Close the cap after every use; in an open bottle, the alcohol evaporates and the balance of the scent is thrown off.
