Makeup Primer

However good your foundation is, the primer sets the stage.

Afternoon shine, foundation settling into pores, base makeup creasing into fine lines by the end of the day — none of these come from your foundation; they come from the step right before it. Alix Avien’s five makeup primers are designed around five different skin behaviors: matte, glow, color correcting, water-based pore-minimizing and multi-purpose. The table below tells you which one is your skin.

Which primer is your skin?

Choosing a makeup primer isn’t about your skin type, it’s about what your skin does during the day. Whichever row on the left describes you, the product in that row is your starting point.

My T-zone gets shiny by the afternoonPrimary Pro Matte$33.95Silica absorbs excess oil and keeps makeup shine-free for up to 12 hours. What makes the difference for this group is that it mattifies without drying: dried-out skin produces more oil, and the shine comes back in the afternoon.
Dry, dull, doesn’t reflect lightPrimary Pro Glow$29.95Squalane and glycerin restore moisture balance and strengthen the skin barrier, giving radiance without a sticky feel. If you want a more noticeable glow, the closest alternative is Luminios Face Primer.
Redness, acne marks or a yellowish toneColor Correcting Base$39.95 · 3 shadesColor correcting is the step that comes before concealer: Mint neutralizes redness, Lavender Rose neutralizes a pale, tired look and Purple neutralizes yellowish dullness. You’ll need noticeably less foundation on top. Coconut oil, glycerin and vitamin E moisturize.
My pores are visible, but I don’t want a matte finishLuminios Face Primer$28.95 · 82 reviews · 4.6 ★Water-based and lightweight; skin absorbs it quickly, and the foundation you apply on top melts into the skin. Its light-reflecting ingredients break up the shadow of the pore — making pores invisible rather than filling them in.

Where does primer go in your routine?

Primer used in the wrong order doesn’t work — not because it’s bad, but because the layer under or over it breaks it down.

Cleanse and moisturize

Primer doesn’t replace moisturizer. After your cleanser, apply your toner and moisturizer and let them absorb. Primer applied to damp skin pills; primer applied to dry skin flakes.

Apply the primer

A pea-sized amount is enough for your whole face. Spread it from the center of your face outward, avoiding the eye area — don’t rub. Rubbing breaks up the silky film it creates and leaves nothing for your foundation to grip.

Foundation or BB cream

Wait 30 seconds, then apply your foundation or BB cream. You should need less foundation over primer than you would without it; concealer for spot corrections comes last.

Set

Press powder only onto the areas that get shiny, not your whole face. Finish with a setting spray: it breaks up the powdery look powder leaves behind and binds the layers together.

If you’d like to see the order step by step with the products, the Flawless Skin Routine walks through the same flow from start to finish; all base products are in the Face Makeup category.

What’s in the formula?

Silica

Silica

An oil-absorbing mineral. It’s where Primary Pro Matte’s 12-hour matte finish comes from, and it optically softens the look of pores and fine lines too.

Squalane

Squalane

The moisturizer closest to the oil your skin produces on its own. It repairs the barrier without weighing skin down — the reason Primary Pro Glow isn’t sticky.

Glycerin

Glycerin

Draws moisture into the skin and holds it there. It keeps the primer layer flexible all day, so the foundation on top doesn’t crack.

Dimethicone

Dimethicone

The backbone of all five formulas. It creates a silky, smooth film on the skin; this is the layer that keeps foundation on the surface instead of sinking into pores.

Vitamin E & Coconut Oil

Tocopherol · Cocos Nucifera Oil

In Color Correcting. They keep the color-correcting pigments from drying out the skin, which is why tinted primers can be used on dry skin too.

The four most common mistakes

Using primer instead of moisturizer

Primer isn’t skincare, it’s a base product. On skin that hasn’t been moisturized, the silicone film has no moisture to hold on to, and makeup starts to look flaky within a few hours. Moisturizer goes under primer, not in place of it.

Applying too much

A pea-sized amount is enough for your whole face. More than that makes the surface your foundation grips slippery: makeup slides during the day and collects in creases. More primer doesn’t mean longer wear — quite the opposite.

Applying foundation without waiting

Give the primer’s film about 30 seconds to set. Foundation applied over wet primer mixes with it, and both settle into lines. The wait time is the cheapest improvement on this page.

Layering water-based and silicone-heavy products

When a heavily silicone-based foundation goes over a water-based primer, the two don’t mix — they pill. Luminios Face Primer is water-based — its safest match is a water-based foundation. If you’re not sure, test it on the back of your hand, not your face.

FAQ

Do I really need a makeup primer?

Not every day. If you only use moisturizer and a light BB cream, you can skip it. But if you wear foundation, have visible pores or find your makeup slides during the day, primer is the single step that changes the result the most: it gives your foundation a smooth surface to sit on instead of bare skin.

Can makeup primer replace moisturizer?

No. Primer stays on top of the skin, while moisturizer sinks in. They do different jobs, and the order is clear: moisturizer first, then primer once it’s absorbed. The one exception is the Rejuvenating Face Base Cream; with its nourishing ingredients, it can take on the moisturizer + primer steps together in a light routine.

Which makeup primer should I use for oily skin?

Primary Pro Matte. Its silica absorbs excess oil and keeps makeup shine-free for up to 12 hours. Because it mattifies without drying, on combination skin you can apply it to your whole face, not just the T-zone.

Which primer hides the look of pores?

There are two different routes. If you want a matte finish, Primary Pro Matte fills and mattifies pores with silica. If you want glowing skin, Luminios Face Primer breaks up the shadow of the pore with its light-reflecting ingredients; pores become invisible without being filled in.

Which color should I choose in a color-correcting primer?

Mint for redness, acne marks and general redness. Lavender Rose for skin that looks pale, tired or gray. Purple for yellowish, dull skin. Applying the color only to the problem area and blending out the edges gives a more natural result than applying it all over your face.

Can makeup primer be worn on its own?

Yes. Luminios Face Primer and Primary Pro Glow give skin radiance on their own, and the Rejuvenating Face Base Cream, thanks to its nourishing formula, can be used for care on no-makeup days. Color-correcting primers can also be worn on their own, applied only to the area you want to correct.

Does makeup primer clog pores or cause breakouts?

It’s less about the primer itself and more about how you remove it at the end of the day. Silicone-based products don’t come off fully with soap and water; in the evening, use an oil-based or micellar makeup remover first, then wash with your usual cleanser. Clogged pores usually come from incomplete cleansing.

The Secret to a Smooth Look: Makeup Primers for Every Skin Type

As a makeup artist who has worked with thousands of different skin types in the makeup chair over the years, I can tell you this: even if you use the most expensive foundation, your makeup will let you down by midday if the base isn't solid. Primer isn't just an "extra"; it's the safe bridge between your skin and your makeup. If you want to keep foundation from settling into your pores, stop shine, or prevent flaking, it's time to meet the right primer.

What Does Makeup Primer Do? Ways to Give Your Skin a Professional Finish

Many people use primer only for longer wear, but its role actually goes much deeper. A good primer fills in micro-imperfections on the skin's surface to create a smooth canvas. While it prevents that unwanted "textured" look, it also helps your foundation's pigments spread more evenly over the surface instead of sinking into your skin.

Water-based, silky textures like the ones Alix Avien offers help minimize the look of pores and fine lines without weighing the skin down. If you don't want your makeup to "oxidize" and change color or melt away with sweat while you're on the go all day, using a primer is your biggest lifesaver.

Why Choose a Water-Based Product? A Bright, Lightweight Finish with Alix Avien

Whatever your skin type, letting your skin breathe is key to the quality of your makeup. Unlike heavy silicone-based formulas, water-based primers don't weigh the skin down and absorb quickly. This is exactly where the Alix Avien Luminous Face Primer comes in. Its light-reflecting properties give your skin a "lit-from-within" glow while also refining the look of pores and prepping your skin for makeup in its freshest state.

If you have combination or oily skin, a water-based texture helps keep your makeup from "breaking through" during the day. If your skin is dry, the silky softness these products offer keeps foundation from clinging to dry patches and creating an unflattering look.

How to Apply Makeup Primer: Expert Tips for the Best Results

Applying primer correctly doubles the product's performance. The most common mistake is applying too much, as if it were a moisturizer. In fact, a pea-sized amount is enough for your whole face.

  • Prep: Make sure your skin is clean and moisturized before applying primer. Wait a few minutes for your moisturizer to absorb completely.
  • Patting Motions: Don't drag the product across your skin; press it in with light patting motions using your fingertips or a damp sponge. This method helps the primer settle into your pores and truly smooth the surface.

How to Blur the Look of Pores: The Secret to a Smooth Complexion

Large pores are makeup's biggest enemy, because foundation can sink into them and create a "pitted" look. Alix Avien's pore-blurring formula skillfully fills these gaps, covering the skin like a silky veil. Thanks to its light-reflecting technology, imperfections are optically blurred, so it looks as if your face has a natural filter.

If you focus your application on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), where pores tend to be more visible, you can also keep shine under control throughout the day. This is the niche detail that keeps your skin looking porcelain-smooth, especially at special events or photo shoots.

The Biggest Primer Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Every now and then I hear, "I used a primer, but my makeup still broke down." There are usually two problems here: either the amount of product is too much, or the products' ingredients are fighting each other. If you use a water-based primer, a water-based foundation on top creates a perfect match. Because water and oil don't mix, layering opposite formulas can make your makeup look "pilled."

Another issue is how primer works with sunscreen. After applying your sunscreen, wait for your skin to absorb it completely, then apply your primer. Alix Avien's lightweight texture doesn't tire the skin during this layering process; on the contrary, it helps the products grip each other better, so the makeup you did in the morning still looks fresh at dinner.

Is Makeup Primer Really Necessary? I'm Sharing the Secret to Flawless Complexion Makeup

Primer actually acts as a protective barrier between your skin and the products you apply. If your pores are visible or your fine lines show more when you apply foundation, this product exists precisely to filter out those "imperfections." Especially if you want makeup that stays fresh all day, using a primer gives you a big comfort zone; it keeps your makeup from melting, breaking down, and changing color as it oxidizes.

This is exactly where the Alix Avien Luminous Face Primer comes in, giving your skin that velvety texture you're after without weighing it down. Its water-based formula lets your skin breathe, while its light-reflecting properties give your skin a healthy glow that seems to come from within. If your skin looks tired, this luminous finish instantly gives you a more energized look.

What to Look for When Choosing a Pore-Blurring, Water-Based Primer

Every skin has different needs, but the look of pores is a concern almost all of us share. When choosing a primer, you need to find a product that won't dry out your skin but won't upset its oil balance either. Alix Avien's water-based, silky texture is actually designed to work with every skin type.

If you have oily or combination skin, you may be looking for mattifying properties to keep your makeup from getting shiny; however, completely mattifying the skin can sometimes create a dull look. That's why products with a "luminous" finish, which both refine the look of pores and add vibrancy to the skin, help you keep your skin's natural radiance. It's also very important for the long-term health of your skin that the product you choose is free of parabens and gluten and dermatologically tested.

How to Apply Makeup Primer for a Smooth Look: Application Techniques from an Expert

If you want to get the most out of your primer, your application order and technique matter more than you think. Here are the steps I've tried over the years that give the best results:

1. Prep Stage: Never apply primer to dirty or not-quite-clean skin. Move on to the primer step after you've cleansed your skin thoroughly and applied your daily moisturizer.

2. The Sunscreen Detail: If you use sunscreen (and you definitely should), your order should be: moisturizer, sunscreen, and then primer.

3. Amount and Technique: A pea-sized amount of product is enough for your whole face; any more can cause your makeup to slide off your skin. Press the product in with your fingertips using patting motions, especially on the T-zone, where pores are most concentrated.

4. The Patience Test: Don't jump to foundation as soon as you've applied primer. Waiting 2–3 minutes for your skin to fully absorb the product and for the base to set makes your foundation look much more even and flawless.
