Makeup Setting Spray

A setting spray isn’t another layer on top of your makeup; it’s what binds the layers together.

Foundation, concealer, and powder are separate layers stacked on top of each other — when one slips, the others break down too. A setting spray forms an ultra-thin film that turns those layers into a single surface and breaks up the dusty look powder can leave behind. Alix Avien’s two sprays take two different approaches: a classic formula that locks makeup in fast, and a hydrating hybrid that works as both a base and a final layer.

Which setting spray is right for you?

The real difference between the two sprays isn’t scent or size — it’s the base formula: one is alcohol-based and quick-drying, the other is water-based and hydrating. How dry your skin is decides the choice.

A quick-drying lock that holds all dayMakeup Fixing Spray 75 ml$12.90 · 717 reviews · 4.7 ★One of the store’s most-reviewed products. Its lightweight formula locks makeup onto the face while letting skin breathe. Acrylates copolymer leaves a thin, flexible film, and the alcohol base lets it dry within seconds; panthenol takes care of the skin-friendly side of the formula. If long wear is your priority, this is your starting point.
A pre-makeup base and a final layer in one productPre & Post Spray$29.95 · 96 reviews · 4.6 ★A hybrid formula. Spritzed before makeup, it floods skin with moisture, smooths it, and preps a better base for foundation; at the end of your routine, it locks in the whole look like an invisible shield. It’s water-based: glycerin, trehalose, urea, sodium hyaluronate, and cucumber extract. Much more comfortable on dry and sensitive skin than an alcohol-based spray.

You can also use the two sprays together: prepping skin with Pre & Post before makeup and locking it in with the classic setting spray at the end gives the longest wear.

Setting your makeup right, in four steps

Setting spray looks simple, but spraying distance and drying time directly change the result.

Hold it 20–30 cm from your face

Sprayed too close, the mist lands as big droplets and spots the powder underneath. Holding the bottle at arm’s length lets the product spread evenly as a fine mist.

Spray in a T and an X

First go across the forehead and down the nose (T), then diagonally from one cheek to the opposite side of the jaw (X). These two motions cover the whole face and keep product from pooling in one area. Don’t forget to close your eyes.

Let it dry — hands off

The film forms as it dries; touching your face, pressing a tissue to it, or fanning it while it’s wet disrupts that layer. Staying still for about thirty seconds gives the best result.

Add a second layer later if needed

For a very long day you can apply two layers, but don’t spray the second until the first is completely dry. Wet on wet leaves droplets instead of a film.

What’s in the formula?

Film-forming polymer

Acrylates Copolymer

How the 75 ml spray works. As it dries, it forms a thin, flexible, invisible mesh; this is the layer that makes it harder for makeup to transfer and break down during the day.

PVP & Pullulan

PVP · Pullulan · Algin

In the Pre & Post spray. Film formers that provide hold without alcohol; pullulan and algin also give skin a temporary tightening feel.

Panthenol

Panthenol (Provitamin B5)

In both formulas. Moisture-retaining and soothing; one of the ingredients that offsets the tight feeling setting sprays can leave on skin.

Hydration trio

Glycerin · Trehalose · Urea

In the Pre & Post spray. Together, the three draw moisture into the skin and hold it there; this combination is why the spray also works as a pre-makeup base.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate · Serine

Also in Pre & Post. Ingredients that attract moisture to the skin’s surface; they help delay makeup from looking dry and cracked during the day.

Cucumber Extract

Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract

The soothing side of Pre & Post. A classic botanical extract known for its cooling effect; one of the ingredients that adds comfort for sensitive skin.

The 75 ml spray dries very quickly thanks to its alcohol (Alcohol Denat.) base; on very dry or sensitive skin, the water-based Pre & Post may feel more comfortable. Full ingredient lists are on the product pages under Ingredients.

The four most common mistakes

Spraying too close

Held too close to the face, the spray leaves droplets instead of a mist; the droplets dissolve the powder and create a spotty look. The arm’s-length rule solves this on its own.

Touching your face before it dries

The film forms the moment it dries. Pressing a tissue to it or trying to fix things with your fingers while it’s wet cancels out everything the setting spray does.

Thinking of it only as a final step

The Pre & Post spray is designed to be used BEFORE makeup, too. Spraying one layer after moisturizer and letting it sit helps foundation go on more evenly. Most people never use this feature.

Using setting spray instead of powder

The two do different jobs: powder absorbs oil and controls shine, while the spray binds the layers together. On oily skin, using both together gives noticeably longer-lasting results.

FAQ

Does makeup setting spray really work?

It does — as long as it’s doing the job you expect. The spray doesn’t “freeze” your makeup; it leaves a thin film that makes it harder for layers to separate, and it breaks up the dusty look of powder. You’ll notice the boost in wear most when there’s a smooth base underneath.

Can setting spray replace powder?

No — the two do different jobs. Powder absorbs oil and controls shine; the spray binds the layers together. On oily skin, you get the best results by using both.

How far away should I spray it?

About 20–30 cm, or arm’s length. Any closer and the product lands as droplets and spots your makeup. Spraying in a T and an X ensures even coverage across the whole face.

I have dry skin — which spray should I choose?

Go for the water-based Pre & Post spray. With glycerin, trehalose, urea, and sodium hyaluronate, it hydrates while it sets. The classic 75 ml spray dries very quickly thanks to its alcohol base; it’s a better fit if long wear is your priority.

What does using a spray before makeup do?

It floods skin with moisture and smooths it, so foundation goes on more evenly and doesn’t settle into pores. The Pre & Post spray is designed for exactly this: spray one layer, let it absorb, then start your makeup.

Can I spray it again during the day?

Yes. First blot away excess oil with a thin tissue, apply a very light layer of powder if needed, then mist the spray from arm’s length. Avoid spraying over wet makeup.

Does setting spray clog pores?

Not as long as you remove it properly. What matters is fully dissolving the film at the end of the day; an oil-based makeup remover followed by a toner to take off what’s left is enough.

How to Use Makeup Setting Spray

Using makeup setting spray is very simple, but applying it the right way will boost its results:

  1. Shake the bottle once your makeup is finished.
  2. Hold the spray 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) away from your face.
  3. Mist evenly over your face in an "X" and a "T" pattern.
  4. Let the product dry; don't rub or blot it with a tissue.
  5. Lightly reapply throughout the day to refresh your makeup.

Tip: Don't overspray or soak your face. Applying too much can make your makeup run.
