Brushes & Accessories

Half of great makeup is the product; the other half is what you apply it with and keep it in.

This page brings two jobs together: the tools that APPLY your makeup (brushes, a mixing palette) and the accessories that CARRY and protect them (bags, a manicure set, a cleaning spray). They share a shelf because they answer the same question — how do you get the best result from the products you already own, and how do you make them last?

What do you need?

This category covers four separate needs. Whichever one is yours, the shelf in that row is the right place to start.

You want to…The right shelfWhy
Apply my products betterMakeup BrushesFace · eyes · brows · lipsA brush is the fastest way to change your result without changing your product. Densely packed bristles build coverage, while loosely packed bristles leave the same product sheer and natural.
Find the right brush for complexion makeupFace BrushesFoundation · concealer · powder · blush · contourFace brushes differ by the size of the area they cover and the texture of the product. Dense, flat heads for liquids; wide, loose heads for powders.
Do detailed work on eyes, brows or lipsEye & Brow BrushesBlending · angled tip · brow spoolieOn small areas a brush makes the most visible difference: soft tips melt color transitions, while angled, firm tips keep lines crisp. Lips have their own shelf: Lip Brushes.
Carry, store and care for my kitAccessoriesBags · sponges · lashes · manicureMakeup bags, sponges, an eyelash curler and cleaning products live on this shelf. The products here are what extend the life of your brushes and make your makeup travel-ready.

If you want everything at once, check out the Brush Sets shelf: sets that come with a bag solve application and storage in one go.

What you want to doProductWhy this one
Apply liquid foundation with high coverageFoundation Brush$30.90 · 948 reviews · 4.8 ★Its dense, flat bristles press product into the skin as they spread it, giving more coverage from the same amount of foundation.
Get a full brush kit in one purchaseTravel Brush Set with Bag$93.90This ten-piece set covers every face, eye and lip job and comes with its own bag. For anyone starting from scratch, it is a more consistent choice than buying piece by piece.
Leave foundation thin and streak-freeKabuki Brush$29.90The short handle and dense, rounded head work in circular motions; instead of dragging product across the skin, it buffs it in and leaves no brush marks.
Cover under-eyes and blemishesOval Concealer Brush$29.90 · 261 reviews · 4.8 ★The small, oval head fits tight areas and spreads creamy concealer without letting it settle into fine lines.
Blend eyeshadow shades togetherEyeshadow Blending Brush$28.90 · 26 reviews · 4.9 ★The round, soft tip sweeps back and forth in the crease and melts the border between two shades. It is the step most often missing from shadow looks.
Clean brushes between washesBrush Cleaning Spray$14.95It wipes the bristles clean to keep colors from mixing and makes a brush reusable within minutes. It does not replace a full wash, but it noticeably reduces how often you need one.

Mix colors and find the right shadeColor Mixing Palette[[F:color-mixing-palette]][[Y:color-mixing-palette]][[S:color-mixing-palette]]It lets you mix two foundations or two concealers on a neutral surface instead of the back of your hand. Since your skin’s warmth and oils don’t get into the mix, you see the true shade.

Looking for an electric option? The battery-powered rotating makeup brush[[S:rotating-magnetic-makeup-brush]] is in this category too, along with a water bottle for staying hydrated.

The four most common accessory mistakes

Drying brushes upright

Water runs down toward the handle and loosens the glue inside the metal ferrule, and the brush starts shedding. After washing, lay brushes flat with the bristles hanging over the edge of the counter.

Using a sponge dry

A makeup sponge swells when it is dampened and squeezed out, so it deposits product onto the skin instead of soaking it up. A dry sponge absorbs most of your foundation; you use twice as much product for the same coverage.

Never emptying your bag

Spilled powder or a product with a loose cap dirties every brush inside the bag. Emptying and wiping it out once a month also stretches the time between brush washes.

Leaving accessories for later

A brush cleaning spray or the right bag can make more of a difference than an expensive makeup product: the first extends the life of the brushes you already own, the second keeps them all ready to use.

FAQ

Why are brushes and accessories in the same category?

Both answer the same question: how do you get the best result from the makeup you already own? Brushes improve application, while accessories support application and help your products last longer. They are searched for separately but used together.

Which bag size should I choose?

Flexible mini bags are enough for a few everyday pieces; if you carry a brush set and several products, you need a structured, wide-opening bag that stands upright. What matters most is not volume but whether your brush heads get crushed.

Is a makeup sponge or a brush better?

They give different results. A sponge sheers product out and leaves a thinner layer for a natural finish; a brush presses product in as it spreads and builds coverage. Many people use both: applying with a brush and softening the edges with a sponge is a common method.

Does brush cleaning spray replace a regular wash?

No, it complements it. The spray prevents colors from mixing between washes and makes a brush ready to use again right away; creamy product built up at the base of the bristles only comes out with a full wash in water and soap.

Why is a manicure set in this category?

The accessories shelf gathers the tools that support your routine, and nail care is one of them. The Nails page also carries a polish remover spray alongside the travel manicure set.

How to Clean Makeup Brushes: A Weekly Care Routine

Makeup brushes are cleaned by holding them bristles-down under lukewarm water and working up a lather with soap in your palm. Rinse until the water runs clear, reshape the bristles by hand and lay the brush flat to dry with the head hanging over an edge. Wash face brushes once a week and eye brushes twice a week.

Water temperature directly affects the result. Hot water opens up the natural shape of the bristles and softens the glue inside the ferrule. Working with lukewarm water gets brushes just as clean without wearing out the bristles.

  • Wet only the bristles; keep the ferrule and handle dry.
  • Lather in your palm or on a cleaning mat with circular motions.
  • Rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Reshape the bristles and dry flat with the head hanging over an edge.

How to Clean a Single Makeup Brush Fast

A single brush can be cleaned with a cleaning spray in about 30 seconds. Spritz the bristles a few times from close range, then sweep the brush back and forth over a paper towel to transfer the pigment. Brush cleaning spray is for switching shades in the same session; it doesn't replace a deep wash with water.

How Often Should You Clean Your Brushes?

Clean brushes according to the texture of the product they work with: foundation and concealer brushes used with liquids and creams once a week, powder and blush brushes every two weeks, and eye brushes twice a week to prevent color transfer. A quick clean with spray can follow every use.

These intervals assume daily use. If you wear makeup two or three times a week, you can double them. What matters is not the calendar but visible pigment buildup in the bristles, or product no longer spreading as evenly as it used to.

How to Dry and Store Brushes

Dry brushes with the bristles facing down or flat for 4-6 hours. Standing them bristles-up in a cup lets water run into the ferrule and loosens the glue inside. Once fully dry, store brushes in a roll or a compartment case that doesn't crush the bristles.

Drying time depends on bristle density. A dense powder brush can take six hours, while a fine-tipped eyeliner brush dries in an hour. A brush put away before it is fully dry traps moisture and leaves an odor at the base of the bristles.

How to Use Brush Cleaning Spray

Hold the brush bristles-down and spritz it 2-3 times from close range. The product should reach only the bristle surface so the ferrule stays dry. Then sweep the brush back and forth over a clean cloth, reshape the bristles and let it dry for a few minutes.

Which Brush Does What?

Brushes fall into three groups by the area they are used on: face brushes spread complexion products, eye and brow brushes work in tight areas, and lip brushes define the outline. Choose bristle density by product texture; dense bristles give more coverage, sparse bristles a sheerer result.

Bristle material also determines how often you need to clean. Synthetic bristles don't absorb liquids and creams, so they clean more easily; natural bristles hold powders better but need gentler handling when washed. Keeping one of each type in your bag covers most needs.

Why Do Brushes Shed, and How Can You Prevent It?

Brushes mostly shed because water gets into the ferrule; the glue inside gets wet and loosens. Hot water, soaking for a long time and drying bristles-up are the three main causes. Lukewarm water, brief contact and drying flat prevent most shedding. For individual pieces, browse our makeup brush selection; for storage and travel solutions, visit the makeup accessories page.

A few stray bristles during the first uses of a new brush is normal. If bristles keep coming out in your palm with every wash, the ferrule has loosened. In that case the brush can stay in service a while longer if you use it only with powders, not complexion products.
